‘. . . I know a guy,’ Lily said.

‘Won’t they just shoot us down?’ Quinn asked worriedly. ‘If we’re unidentified then they’ll shoot us. Nothing is getting in or out.’

‘I know a guy,’ she repeated.

Oh, of course she had a guy, I found it better not to ask questions with her.

‘I’ll pack the essentials,’ I said, a small smile on my face. ‘The rest of you know what to do. We leave tonight.’

With a final sigh I tipped the flask, splashing the rest of the tequila over the black glossy top.

‘Goodbye.’

Even though Naomi had suggested it, I had been thinking the same thing – well, not the sneaking down to London part, but about avenging Jessica. Would that atone for what I’d done? If I brought her killer to justice?

We all headed back to the car at the far end of the cemetery, however as we did, the click of another car door sounded, the one sporting an American flag. A tall man stepped out dressed in black, his brown hair slicked back. He marched down the aisle of graves, a stony expression on his face. He carried a briefcase at his side and for a moment I panicked – what could be in there?

‘He showed,’ Kayson said breathlessly.

‘Who?’ Quinn asked.

‘Jessica’s father.’

A stunned silence hung in the air around us for a moment, until the piercing smack of heels broke the air. Emerging from the car this time was a slender woman, once again dressed in black. Her hair was the exact same colour as Jessica’s but bolt straight instead of curly. Jessica and Charlotte were very similar, even in the way they held themselves.

‘And mother,’ I murmured in awe.

All of us stared like spectators at the zoo, witnessing a sight that Jessica had never seen. Her parents together. The wind picked up so as the pair chatted their words were lost; maybe it was best we didn’t hear.

‘Only took three of their kids dying for them to show,’ Lily said, and this time I didn’t move to correct her.

‘I’ve never seen her dad,’ Quinn whispered.

‘I’ll be back in a minute,’ I said quickly, reaching into my bag.

I knew Nicola had invited them so I’d brought a little something just in case, despite Kayson telling me they didn’t deserve it. There were a few questions but I ignored them and walked over to her parents, their conversation finally reaching my ears.

‘I found out from my secretary about James –’

‘You’re here now,’ Charlotte said.

‘Am I supposed to thank you for that?’ the man exclaimed.

‘I made sure our children could defend themselves, that they could protect this country.’

‘And where have they ended up Charlotte?’ I thought Jessica inherited her anger from her mother but it wasn’t, it was her father.

The way his eyebrows creased together and face blazed told me everything I needed to know. Charlotte hadn’t told him a thing, even after he left. He was more clueless than us.
